‘The Lighthouse’ First Look

THE LIGHTHOUSE, directed by Robert Eggers and starring Willem Defoe and Robert Pattison, is set to debut at Cannes Film Festival 2019 as part of the Directors’ Fortnight. I’m super excited to share the work we did on this film after it is released. For now, I will say that we designed and built the titular set and I could not be more proud of the work accomplished by the crew. Here is the first officially released image. More to come!

Cavendish

Production Design

We got up to some serious silliness on CBC’s Cavendish. Wax statues, giant crystals, caves, accoutrements of the dark arts, flying saucers and three-eyed easter island heads are just a small sample of the crazy things we designed and built to bring Andy and Mark’s vision to life.

From CBC:

Brothers Mark (Mark Little) and Andy (Andy Bush) return to Cavendish for the first time since childhood to care for their ailing father who runs The Museum of the Strange and Fantastic. They quickly find out that Cavendish is not like other towns, and while Mark (the golden boy) and Andy (the striver) become embroiled in creepy misadventures, they soon realize their family dynamic hasn’t changed much since they were kids.

Cavendish airs on CBC or can be viewed online through the CBC Gem app (link below).

Nominated for achievement in Production Design by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television

Just after the end of the Vietnam War and in the midst of the American bicentennial celebrations of 1976, runaway Kit and his girlfriend Alice hitchhike their way along the east coast of Canada.

“Abetted by outstanding costume and production design and period-appropriate pop-rock on the soundtrack (Harry Nilsson, Edward Bear, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray), he perfectly balances nostalgia and in-the-moment drama. Weirdos is quietly alive with the sensuous detail of the road, the thrill of dislocation and the unknown territory of that once-in-a-lifetime cusp, being 15.”

LURE (film): Prison Sets

Production Design

These are some prison interiors that we created using an old abandoned school as our canvas. These sets play a crucial role in the movie with a good chunk of the story taking place inside them. It was important that the rooms felt old and used.

You would never know when watching this episode of Haven, but we built this entire Sewer set inside our studio. The only thing missing: Ninja Turtles. Check out the “Making Of” video link to the right. We lucked out and had a behind the scenes crew there to document the planning and construction.

HAVEN (tv): Diner Sign

Set Design

This was a really fun project. We wanted a classic old tubed neon ‘Diner’ sign but the sign was only going to be seen during the day. It allowed us to save some major cash by faking the neon tubes with plumbing pipes and fittings.

"OPTIMUS REIM" Globe and Mail article

James Reimer, goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs, was on fire when he burst on to the scene for the Toronto Maple Leafs. I created this logo to go along with his fan created nickname “Optimus Reim”. The graphic caught on like wild fire on social media and ended up appearing on SportsCentre, in the Globe and Mail and eventually on to several of James Reimer’s masks.

Check out Jay Onrait showing off the logo on SportsCentre.
